Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to become creative and drawn by art. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse to ensure she could continue her passion for literature and theatre during the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be powerful in promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. In 1999, she established her own private company for public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. The company also launched a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
