Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artwork and inspiration. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt time that she required during the working day to pursue her passion for theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be an effective tool for social change. DuVernay grew up with parents who were well-informed and taught her how to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama led her to create a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still in the college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish in the house by a member jury. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, she chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several promotions and lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
